The increases at Limassol Port are the result of its privatisation
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas on the increases at the Port of Limassol
22 January 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The recent increases that are being imposed by the private interests managing the Port of Limassol are causing a chain of increases in the clothing and housing construction sector. Increases that are being shifted on to the shoulders of working people, households and young couples.
This is the result of the privatisation of the Port of Limassol. The state has lost the country’s only commercial port. The port has become more expensive. Transit trade has decreased. Working people’s rights were undermined. The latest increases are a reminder that the ruling DISY party not only privatised the country’s only commercial port, but also drew up a deal that is damaging to both society and the economy.
