AKEL on International Migrants Day

18 December 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

18 December was declared by the UN as International Migrants Day to strengthen the implementation of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and their Families.

On the occasion of International Migrants Day, AKEL extends a warm greeting to all migrants living and working in Cyprus and to all Cypriot migrants living and working abroad.

Cypriots know very well that no one chooses to become a refugee, no one chooses to become a migrant. It is the ongoing imperialist attacks, wars, economic misery, social and political oppression and natural disasters that are forcing millions of people to migrate.

The refugee and migration issue is a huge and complex issue whose handling must be based on the respect for life and dignity, on international and European conventions on human rights. Like every other state, Cyprus has an obligation to respect international and European legislation and to make use of the European funding it receives. Our country must implement a comprehensive immigration policy which covers all issues relating to entry, residence and access to employment and social rights in our country, with a commitment to respect human rights and human dignity.

AKEL reaffirms that it will continue to fight for the labour rights and gains of all working people, for the unity and class fraternity and solidarity of working people, for the stamping out of racism and nationalism, for the combatting of human trafficking and for a society based and guided by solidarity.
