The genocide in Gaza is a turning point for modern humanity

AKEL Press Office statement 19 May 2025

The escalating Israeli brutality in the Gaza Strip is multiplying the number of dead, targeting hospitals, shelters and refugee camps, intensifying the deliberate strategy to starve the civilian population, within the context – as always – of the organized operation to displace and annihilate the Palestinian people from their land. Netanyahu’s statements about extending the occupation and seizing of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli army are a typical admission of the objective that the Israeli regime has had from the very beginning. As to the disregard for the UN Secretary-General’s new call for a ceasefire, this confirms Israel’s audacity as a result of the cover-up and the support it enjoys from the USA, the EU leadership of the EU and a number of European governments.

The genocide in Gaza is a turning point for modern humanity and its future, since it demolishes all notions of international law and humanity. Those who support or tolerate this ongoing crime by Israel have become complicit and accountable before history for the mass massacres that have been committed of children and civilians. As the voices of condemnation of Israel are increasing, the Christodoulides government is becoming more exposed for its choice to cover up the wanted war criminal Netanyahu and the genocide.

The bare minimum that the international community and the EU in particular should have decided is to impose sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel, to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. AKEL will not cease to raise and unite its voice with the global movement of solidarity with Palestine demanding an agreement for a ceasefire, an end to the occupation and colonalisation, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital. This is the only way for peace to prevail in the Middle East, for a future of security and peace for the Palestinian and Israeli people.

After all, what is it that Mr. Christodoulides owes Netanyahu to shame our country for his sake?
