77 years since Nakba | Solidarity with the people of Palestine
In 1948, the Palestinian people experienced uprooting from their homes, displacement, massacres, the usurpation of their properties, the “Nakba”, the destruction of their way of life and their social fabric. For 77 years, the State of Israel has continued its attempts to completely expel the Palestinians from their land and to eliminate all evidence of their presence for centuries in this land.
The Nakba is unfortunately not only a historical event; it is also present. Today, for almost 20 months, the first genocide of the 21st century is taking place in Gaza before the eyes of all humanity. The total destruction attempted by Israel with its state-of-the-art war machine, reinforced by the United States and its NATO allies, has killed more than 51 thousand Palestinians, mainly children and women. Using starvation as a weapon to force displacement and the disappearance of an entire generation of Palestinians. By destroying more than 70% of the housing units, all the hospitals, schools, universities, mosques and churches, Netanyahu aims to colonise Gaza and turn it into a tourist site. Occupation, settlements, house demolitions, imprisonment, killings, pogroms are a daily occurrence in both the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
AKEL expresses its unreserved solidarity with the Palestinian people and joins with everyone in the world demanding an end to the genocide, an end to the impunity of the State of Israel, implementation of ICJ rulings, respect for international law and UN resolutions. We demand immediate recognition of an independent Palestinian State on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, the full restoration of human rights and fundamental freedoms of the Palestinian people. The Palestinian people have every right to freedom and Palestinian refugees have every right to return, and humanity must demand it. Only then will both Palestinians and Israelis be able to have a peaceful and secure future. This is what Cyprus must also support.
