The ceasefire shouldn’t be just a break in Azerbaijan’s strategy of ethnic cleansing against Armenians

Developments in Nagorno-Karabakh are causing immense concern and indignation.

The military raid launched by Azerbaijan on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh targeting the Armenian population is absolutely reprehensible. It is doubly reprehensible because Azerbaijan has chosen the force of arms and aggression at the same time as the General Assembly of the United Nations is convening.

AKEL stresses that the announced ceasefire must not be just a break in Azerbaijan’s wider strategy of ethnic cleansing against the Armenians of the region. The blocking of the Lachin corridor since last December has already created a serious humanitarian crisis for the Armenian population in Karabakh.

Azerbaijan is committing crimes and atrocities with the blessing of Turkey, which is also guilty of ongoing crimes and gross violations of international law. The international community is called upon to act to prevent ethnic cleansing against the Armenian population.
