Statement by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou on yesterday’s plenary of the Central Committee of AKEL

30 January 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Yesterday’s plenary of the Central Committee of AKEL unanimously reaffirmed the Party’s judgment that Cyprus needs a progressive change. First and foremost, it needs to get rid of the government of DISY, which during the years of its rule has led Cyprus to rock bottom and caused many deadlocks on all the key issues that determine the course of our country and people.

To achieve progressive change, the Central Committee of AKEL unanimously reaffirmed the position that the Party will continue to work more intensively and concretely to effort to forge cooperation with the opposition parties. We will therefore proceed more intensively in the coming period to develop a dialogue with these parties which, like AKEL too, realise that Cyprus needs change.

At the same time, we have decided to go to the party grass roots in order to enter into a discussion with the people of the Party, with the New Forces and the friends of the Party so we can listen to their views and approaches in relation to this effort that we will be undertaking ahead of the presidential elections in February 2023.
