29 January 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL with sorrow bids farewell to the veteran leading cadre of AKEL, Louki Aletra, who passed away today. Loukis Aletras linked his entire life with AKEL and the Cypriot Left, with its ideology and visions. He marked this path with selfless dedication and faith in the rights of the working people and our country.

He joined the ranks of the class-based trade union movement and participated in the workers’ struggles of the 1940’s-50’s. He took part in the Founding Congress of the Progressive Youth Organisation (AON), forerunner of EDON Youth Organisation. Comrade Loukis Aletras was imprisoned repeatedly for his political activity during the years of British colonial rule and was among the 135 Party cadres imprisoned in December 1955 when the British colonialists outlawed AKEL. He served AKEL from various positions of responsibility and was for many years a member of the Party’s top leadership, the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the Central Committee.

AKEL honors with gratitude and respect comrade Louki Aletra and his contribution to the people and the homeland. It expresses its sincere condolences to the family of comrade Louki.
