Statement by General Secretary of AKEL S.Stefanou after the meeting with the Health Insurance Organization (HIO)

29 March 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

June marks 3 years since the introduction of the National Health Scheme (NHS), a very important reform for the country, society and the country, for which AKEL has been working hard to make it happen. And that is precisely why we are interested in evaluating the experience of the first 3 years, to see how the system works, what problems there are, what shortcomings it has and even what abuses are taking place in the system, so that all the necessary decisions and necessary actions can be taken to address the problems and help the system not just to continue to exist, but to improve for the benefit of society and citizens.

As part of this evaluation, which AKEL is carrying out, we had a meeting with the Health Insurance Organization today. We had a very interesting discussion about the issues that exist in relation to the NHS. We will continue this contact with the State health services OKYPY, the Minister of Health and the Federation of Patient’s Associations (OSAK). Tomorrow we will hold a Press Conference regarding the NHS.

AKEL will continue not just to be supportive, but to take those necessary initiatives that need to be taken so that improvements, corrections and moves are made that do not undermine the system or change the architecture and philosophy of the system that must remain, but improve things. We will also keep in touch with stakeholders and key parties involved to give a perspective and depth to this very important reform for our country.
