“NO” to the transfer of asphalt plants to the Vasilikos area

AKEL Larnaca District Organisation:

9 February 2022

“The AKEL Larnaca District Committee expresses once again its opposition to the installation of asphalt factories in the industrial region of Vasilikos and supports the mobilisations being organised by the nine local communities of the area,” reads a statement.

More specifically the statement notes the following:

“Recently, applications have been submitted for the installation of three asphalt plants in the industrial area of Kalavasou and are in the process of completing the environmental study by the Department of Environment.

AKEL recalls that the Anastasiades-DISY government made a promise to the communities of the Kalavasou region that with the establishment of the energy centre there will no longer be any such developments, and more specifically the installation of asphalt factories. We call on the government ruling forces for the umpteenth time to at long last honor their pledges.

The dangerous situation for the health and safety of residents in the Nicosia district resulting from the operation of existing asphalt plants must not be experienced by other citizens.

AKEL’s position is that the Government should proceed with the elaboration of a comprehensive strategic land-use plan, so that an appropriate location for such industries can finally be achieved.

At the same time, it is necessary to formulate a proper control mechanism before the licensing and throughout the operation of the factories, which will effectively ensure public health and the protection of the environment.

The mobilization of the local communities in the region will take place on Friday 11 February 2022 from 8:30am to 11:00am at the Kalavasou roundabout.”
