High cost of living is snowballing and the government is turning a blind eye

AKEL initiatives in Parliament to tackle price increases

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

22 March 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

For months now, AKEL has been submitting proposals to curb the price increases and high cost of living that is sweeping Cypriot society and to tackle the increases in electricity, fuel and almost all essential goods. The government either remains apathetic or – even worse – tries to downplay the scale of the problem. A problem that is now taking the form of an avalanche that is crushing households, working people, pensioners and small businesses.

In the face of the government’s provocative attitude, AKEL is taking the initiative in Parliament to promote three specific proposals for:

  • Removal of the RES fee from electricity bills
  • Adoption of a zero VAT rate for pollutants in electricity bills
  • Abolition of the double taxation on fuel

We call on the opposition forces to work together to push forward these proposals that can provide a relief for people. Since the government itself is not moved to take action, let it never again stand in the way of the initiatives we take, both in and out of Parliament.
