AKEL on the government reshuffle

23rd June 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Mr. Anastasiades confirmed yesterday that the government reshuffle was done to serve its Program and image. Although he claimed that he was seeking collaborations and consensus, in practice he was looking for accomplices to his policies, the ethos and style of his government.

Mr. Anastasiades’ choices raise questions. The new government spokesman has repeatedly been in the news for his extremist positions on immigration, to the point that even his own party is trying to distance itself from them. The appointment of the former director of the Office of the President, Mr. Viktoras Papadopoulos to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands answers about its legitimacy and expediency.

Regarding the attack by Mr. Anastasiades on AKEL on the issue of the President appointing Adamos Adamou to a ministerial post, we stress that the decision to accept or reject the proposal was down exclusively to Adamos Adamou himself. What AKEL did point out is the contradiction that would have existed with the participation of a renowned politician who served for years from the parliamentary bench of the Left in a DISY Government, stating that in the end it is the people that judge us all.
