AKEL calls on the government to revoke the appointment of an advisor to the Deputy Minister of Tourism
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
8 May 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The appointment of a 19-year-old student, without a degree, to the position of adviser-consultant to the Deputy Minister of Tourism is a provocation to the whole of society. The government must provide an answer and list the qualification experience of the person in question to be appointed to this position.
The fact that Ministers should have the discretion to select persons of their own confidence for the position of their advisor does not mean that they are entitled to disregard people’s logic and intelligence. Besides, this decision even violates the framework that was established, after much pressure, by the Council of Ministers of the Anastasiades government, in which the current President of the Republic participated. That framework stipulates that advisers must be at least 21 years old and hold a university degree.
With the momentum that Nicos Christodoulides has gained, he will not only continue, but is predicted to surpass his predecessor in cronyism.
AKEL calls on the government to revoke the specific appointment.
