AKEL supports the demands of school pupils

Meeting between AKEL and the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee of School Students (PSEM)

8 May 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

An AKEL delegation had a meeting today with the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee of School Students (PSEM), in which the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, had the opportunity to be informed of the main problems pupils face and the demands being asserted by the organised school pupil’s movement.

The PSEM delegation delivered to the General Secretary of AKEL the positions approved by PSEM’s Conference which convened last March and outlined its views on the need to reformulate the school curriculum, resolve the issue of unpaid internships in technical schools and mitigate the issue of private tuition. A key issue during the discussion was the position of PSEM in favour of the abolition of the quarterly examinations system and its proposal for a new way of evaluating pupils.

On AKE’s part, Stefanos Stefanou assured the delegation of PSEM that AKEL was and continues to stand against the anti-educational philosophy of the four-month examinations system. The General Secretary of AKEL also referred to AKEL’s efforts, both during the term of the previous government and today too, for a meaningful discussion for the creation of a new way of assessing school students. AKEL has been and remains a supporter of the demands of pupils, by submitting specific positions and making continuous efforts for the upgrading of the educational system as a whole.

The delegation of AKEL also included the General Secretary of EDON Seviros Koulas, while on behalf of PSEM the meeting was attended by Stavros Nikolaou, Treasurer of PSEM and Rafael Panagi, member of the Secretariat of the PSEM Nicosia – Kyrenia District Organisation.
