Turkey’s action to open the coastal front of the fenced-off city of Famagusta is justifiably provoking anger and indignation

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 9th October 2020, Nicosia

Turkey’s action to open the coastal front of the fenced-off city of Famagusta is understandably provoking anger, indignation and shock to all our people. Turkey’s plans, which it is promoting in cooperation with the forces of partition in the occupied territories, are undermining the prospect of the solution and objectively consolidating the occupation, partition and the colonalisation of our homeland. As such, this action must be denounced at every international and European body and forum by the government, the Municipality of Famagusta and every organized body and forum. AKEL will continue to support and strengthen these efforts with initiatives it is undertaking at all levels.

At the same time, yesterday’s mass mobilization of Famagusta residents and citizens from all over Cyprus against the plans for the colonalisation of the fenced-off city of Famagusta showed the determination to prevent the new crime of the occupying power from being committed against the city of Famagusta and Cyprus as a whole. The city must delivered to its lawful inhabitants. This determination, to yield tangible results, must highlight the need for the resumption of talks on the Cyprus problem with the goal of reaching a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem within the agreed framework and from the point where they had remained at Crans Montana. AKEL recalls that the continuation from the point where we had remained, regarding Famagusta means the bringing back by the Turkish side of the map with Famagusta under Greek Cypriot administration.

AKEL has been warning for several years now that Turkey will exploit the absence of negotiations, in conjunction with its exoneration recorded in the UN Secretary-General’s report on the collapse of the Crans Montana conference, to create new illegal fait accompli. The solution of the Cyprus problem, the liberation and reunification of Cyprus is the only way to prevent new accomplishments and to open the way for the justification of our homeland and our people.
