Statement of Aristos Damianou, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL, MP on the UN Security Council statement reaffirming the status of Varosha

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th October 2020, Nicosia

We express our satisfaction with the Declaration of the UN Security Council reaffirming the status of Varosha as set out in Council Resolutions including resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992) and stressing that no actions should be carried out in relation to Varosha that are not in line with those texts.

Particularly important is the reaffirmation of the commitment of the UN Security Council “to a lasting, comprehensive and just settlement in accordance with the wishes of the Cypriot people and based on a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality, as set out in the relevant resolutions of the Security Council”, as well as the call issued to engage “in a constructive dialogue and with a sense of urgency following the electoral process in the Turkish Cypriot community”. This is a position that echoes previous references by the UN Secretary General himself and shows the way we must take.
