JOINT STATEMENT AKEL-CTP
The General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou and the President of CTP Tufan Erhurman, accompanied by representatives of both parties held on 1st March 2022 a very constructive meeting at the offices of CTP. During the meeting we explicitly reaffirmed our commitment towards the resumption of substantial negotiations for a comprehensive solution on the agreed basis of a bicommunal and a bizonal federation with political equality, as it is set out in the relevant UNSC resolutions.
We reiterated our deep concern with regards to the ongoing stalemate, the multifaceted dangers and detrimental consequences that the current situation poses against both communities. We underlined that the status quo is neither static nor viable and that the uncertainties pertaining to the future of our island demand the resumption of the negotiation process in line with the parameters of the UN and from the point the negotiations were left off at Crans Montana in 2017.
It is our common observation that the prolonged stalemate, the absence of political will to proceed in a meaningful way with the negotiations, the negative rhetoric and the escalation of tensions in the last years has had a negative impact on both communities. Therefore, we agreed to continue with our collaboration and undertake additional common initiatives to enhance trust, to regenerate belief as to the benefits of the solution and give voice to the forces in both communities which demand the resumption of the negotiations and the comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis.
