Thousands of disillusioned young people in Cyprus in 2021

Statement by the Head of the Social Policy Sector of the C.C. of AKEL Evanthia Savva

30 November 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

According to the released by the Statistical Office yesterday, in the third quarter of 2021, almost 28,000 young people under the age of 29 years old are totally inactive. That is to say, they are out of work, education and out of any training.

These figures reflect the prevailing situation among our young people. To put it simply, the conditions and prospects that exist for the young generation today are disappointing.

The lack of quality jobs, low wages, the difficult to unattainable goal of obtaining housing and the extremely high rents, are driving more and younger people back to their parent’s home.

The current generation is the first generation that is living and will live worse than previous generations.

AKEL we consider it our duty and responsibility towards the young generation to change these conditions. We listen to the concerns and aspirations of young workers, the unemployed, young scientists and young couples. We elaborate and put forward specific proposals for:

  • a comprehensive policy on housing
  • quality and affordable housing,
  • the regulation and protection of labour
  • quality and dignified jobs
  • a comprehensive policy to provide support to families

Once again we underline our determination to resist and oppose policies that are leading the young generation to inaction and to continue to work both in and out of Parliament to support young people.
