We will not permit responsibilities to remain unaccounted for
26 July 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Two days after the outbreak of the biggest fire in the country, the government has not uttered a single word of apology. Nikos Christodoulides and his government continue to deny their grave responsibilities, which has led to the enormous ecological disaster with the loss of lives and the destruction of the property of thousands of our fellow citizens.
More specifically, the statements made by the Minister of Justice about the “unfortunate incident” surrounding the death of two of our fellow citizens proves that the government not only has failed to grasp the scale of the disaster, but also confirms the lack of responsibility it has demonstrated in other cases too. Instead of taking responsibility by dismissing the two relevant Ministers responsible — as the political heads in charge —the government has the audacity to add insult to injury by attacking those who criticize it.
AKEL will not permit responsibilities to once again remain unaccounted for. On its own initiative, AKEL has convened a joint meeting of the Parliamentary Internal Affairs, Agriculture and Environment Committees to discuss responsibilities and the many issues that have arisen.
Right now, it is also important to work to repair the damage and offer support to those affected by the fires. To this end, on Wednesday, 30th July, a delegation from AKEL and the people’s movement of the Left, headed by the General Secretary of AKEL, will tour the affected areas and meet with local community leaders and authorities.
