The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL met with the Chargé d’Affaires of Syria

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met today with the new Chargé d’Affaires of Syria in Cyprus, Haydar Ali Ahmad. During the meeting it was stressed that the continuous violations of international law constitute a permanent threat to the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean region too.

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL briefed the Chargé d’Affaires of Syria about the situation on the Cyprus problem and Turkey’s ongoing provocative actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus and Varosha. Furthermore, S.Stefanou stressed the urgent need to overcome the deadlock, to resume the talks from the point where they were interrupted at Crans Montana with the aim of reaching a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with political equality as defined by the UN reports.

The Syrian diplomat briefed the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL on the situation in Syria, and the serious consequences for the population as a result of the arbitrary and illegal sanctions that have been imposed.

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL stressed the problems that are being provoked to the efforts to rebuild the country, so that the conditions for the return of the millions of Syrian refugees are created.
