The new presidential pre-election pledges are a bad joke

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

17th May 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

After exhausting all the means at its disposal to rally its voters and realising that they haven’t yielded results, ruling DISY party resorted to the old-party system pre-election method: announcements with a few plenty of “pledges”. We will do this, we will do that, a pre-election wish list devoid of any credibility.

We will not bother to comment on what the President of the Republic so generously announced today too in promising the Cyprus of tomorrow. The announcements made by N. Anastasiades and DISY do not withstand serious criticism because on the one hand, many of them are rehashed pledges and on the other hand, the record of the government ruling forces is full of broken promises. It is no coincidence that during the DISY government’s administration the phrase “I pledge to” became the shortest joke in our political history.

It is ridiculous for DISY and its government to be talking about the “Cyprus of tomorrow”, when after eight years in power, they have led our country to the brink of partition, discredited our country across the world with the golden passports scandal and downgraded our society to the 3rd place from the bottom of the table across Europe concerning the quality of life of its citizens.

These are the sad results of the policies pursued by DISY and its government and its inability to rally even its own voters.

The people are now well aware of the methods used by the government ruling forces to deceive which is why they will not fall victim to them again.
