The government’s attempt to impose silence is dangerous for democracy
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th May 2020, Nicosia
The revelation by Haravgi daily newspaper that an investigation has been launched by the Board of the state-owned Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK) due to an order ‘from above’ because the newspaper’s revelation was reported in the Corporation’s evening news bulletin, is yet more proof that the government ruling forces are seeking to cover up problems and silence any voice that does not agree with their oen.
The government ruling forces are trying to impose a silence. That’s precisely the reason why, for them, any different point of view is perceived as an “unnecessary confrontation”, as the government stated yesterday, or that any criticism is “destructive opposition”, as ruling DISY party has been saying in recent days.
This government ruling force’s logic is dangerous for democracy and the freedom of the press, even in a time of pandemic. If they do have a different view, it would be useful if they would inform the public about it.
