Meeting between the General Secretary of CC AKEL and the Minister of the International Department of the CC of the Communist Party of China

Yesterday, AKEL held a meeting with a multi-member delegation of the Communist Party of China, led by the Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, LIU Jianchao and accompanied by the Ambassador of Chine to Cyprus LIU Yantao. The AKEL delegation was led by the General Secretary of CC AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou. The meeting took place in the context of the visit to Cyprus as part of the tour to a number of European countries by the high-level Chinese delegation.

There was a special discussion and briefing on the Cyprus problem, with AKEL highlighting the stable role of the People’s Republic of China in positions of principle and its role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. On his part, Minister LIU Jianchao reaffirmed his country’s position on the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions and a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.

The two delegations had a productive discussion concerning the bilateral relations between AKEL and the Communist Party of China, which they consider to be very positive and constantly developing on the basis of sincere exchanges and mutual respect. They believe that these relations have a positive impact and contribute to the  broader Cyprus-China relations. Inter-state relations are being strengthened, which is important in the context of rapid international developments. The two delegations coincide on the stand that international relations should be built on the basis of diplomacy, cooperation and mutual benefit, rather than on the path of tension and militarisation. By extension, current international armed conflicts and disputes must also be resolved within this framework.

Finally, it was agreed that exchanges and discussions between the two parties would continue.
