Social pressure against the unacceptable stance of the Christodoulides government regarding the genocide yields results

The Ministry of Education’s backpedalling on the holding of an event with the Israeli embassy at a primary school is the result of pressure from citizens, organizations, and AKEL. Unfortunately, it was not self-evident to the government that the propaganda of the Israeli genocidal regime has no place in our schools. This development confirms that social pressure and mass mobilizations against genocide and the unacceptable stance of the Christodoulides government can bring results. The majority of our people do not approve of or tolerate the silence and cover-up of the mass murder of thousands of children in Gaza by the Israeli war machine.

At the same time, we call on the government to respond to today’s article in the “Cyprus Mail” and reports of an imminent docking or entry into Cypriot territorial waters of a ship carrying military equipment to support the Israeli army. It should be noted that Portugal has already announced the removal of the Portuguese flag from the ship in question, and a number of states have refused to allow it to dock due to its complicity in genocide. We call on the government to clarify what applies and what its general policy is on this issue.

We remind you that, beyond the moral obligation not to cooperate in genocide and war crimes, there are also legal obligations for all states, including the Republic of Cyprus, not to facilitate Israel’s illegal and barbaric actions in the occupied Palestinian territories. These legal obligations arise from international law, the UN Convention on Genocide, and, more specifically, from the opinion of July 19, 2024, of the International Court of Justice.
