RIK should inform objectively and not serve government expediencies

Statement by AKEL Press Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th May 2020, Nicosia

The Board of Directors of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK) must answer in which other case it has ordered an investigation about a transmission of a newspaper report, on the excuse that the report is based on anonymous sources. Has it ever commissioned an investigation into the anonymous “government sources” that permeate a lot of RIK’s news reports, indeed without even presenting the opposing view?

The RIK Board of Directors claim that it did not receive an order ‘from above’ to carry out the investigation. If this is indeed the case, then it means that the RIK Board itself is showing excessive zeal in protecting the Anastasiades-DISY government from annoying revelations, even if this means silencing journalism. This however is not the job of the Corporation’s Board.

In any case, everyone must realise that public broadcasting is not the expressive instrument of the government and that taxpayers don’t pay for that.
