The Education Ministry must take a stand on the attack on two schoolgirls by ultra-right pupils

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th November 2020, Nicosia

AKEL vehemently denounces the incident of the mass harassment of two school students inside the Lyceum of Dasoupolis, during the event to denounce the pseudo-state organized by the Pancyprian Committee of School Students (PSEM). More specifically, the two schoolgirls holding placards with slogans in favor of peace and the reunification of Cyprus were attacked by a group of other pupils who attacked them swearing at them, with fascist slogans and shouting in favor of the neo-Nazi ‘Golden Dawn’ party. The most worrying of all is the tolerance demonstrated and the justification of the incident, which according to the complaints, was shown by the school Heads.

This incident is a disgrace to Cypriot education and society. The infiltration and activity of extreme right and nationalist forces in our schools is a dangerous phenomenon that recalls the darkest phases of our country’s modern history.

We call on the Ministry of Education to take an immediate position on this unacceptable incident, examine the denunciations made by the schoolgirls and carry out an investigation into the handling of the school Heads.
