The CYPRA abattoir case is a megaton scandal

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 20th November 2020, Nicosia

Without any doubt the case of the CYPRA abattoir is a scandal of enormous proportions. It is obvious that in this case there are:

  • Issues arising from Conflict of interests.
  • Issues of incompetence, inadequacy and unforgivable negligence on the part of the competent Ministries and state services on labour, environmental and town planning matters.
  • Issues relating to government political responsibilities.

The political responsibilities are specific:

  • It is during the Anastasiades-DISY government that the abattoir acquired a dominant, in actual fact a monopoly position, in its field.
  • When state services do not function properly, the government cannot plead that it bears no responsibilities.

The scope of the scandal, however, is so great that it cannot be limited to incompetence and inadequacy and conflict of interest!

Without political backing and cover, no one can be immune and unpunished for his/her illegal actions over so many years.

The government must at long last speak up and provide convincing answers to the serious issues that are being raised!
