Why is the government silent on the CYPRA abattoir case?
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th November 2020, Nicosia
The CYPRA abattoir case sums up a series of events of business and employer arbitrariness combined with a monumental incompetence or reluctance on the part of the state to enforce the law. The denunciations that have come to light about the CYPRA abattoir reveal a vicious circle of private monopoly, interwoven interests and favoritism by the state, the exploitation and humiliation of workers, issues relating to public health and the quality of life for local communities, town planning arbitrariness and systematic illegalities with the government’s tolerance and contempt for health protocols.
The root of this case lies in the Anastasiades government’s decision to close down the semi-governmental abattoir of Kofinou, and by doing so serving the creation of the CYPRA private monopoly on the slaughter of cattle. The owner of the busibess, exploiting the monopoly position granted to him by the government, is ignoring laws, decrees, protocols and the whole society.
Citizens are yet again wondering, against the background of the big debate that is taking place about interwoven interests and corruption in our country:
Why is the government cunningly silent in a case that stands out?
