Statements by General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL S.Stefanou after the meeting with the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Theocharis Lalakos
9th July 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
I would like to welcome the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus, Mr. Lalakos, to the offices of the Central Committee of AKEL, who was kind enough to come here today to offer his congratulations. We used this opportunity to discuss various issues, mainly on the Cyprus problem. It is well known, I will repeat, that Greece is Cyprus’ main pillar of support in our efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, to end the Turkish occupation and reunite our country and its people. At a time when there are worrying developments in relation to Famagusta, in anticipation of the Turkish President’s illegal visit to the occupied areas of Cyprus and what he is reportedly going to announce.
I want to assure – and I have assured – the Greek Ambassador that our cooperation as a party with Greece, the political leadership of Greece and the Greek Embassy here in Cyprus will of course continue. These relations and the dialogue that we have is always frank and cordial. It is mutually beneficial so that together, through discussions, each from his own perspective, we can do our best to further and continuously strengthen the fraternal relations between Cyprus and Greece and to better coordinate efforts at various levels. Especially on the Cyprus problem, which is an issue that is decisive in relation to the prospect of the survival of the Republic of Cyprus and our people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
