Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on tonight’s meeting between the leaders of the two communities

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 3rd November 2020, Nicosia

Tonight’s meeting between the leaders of the two communities is taking place in a negative environment given the Turkish aggression and the fait accompli it is initiating in Varosha, the Turkish demand for a two-state solution and the prolonged absence of negotiations on the Cyprus problem.

The positions of Ersin Tatar and Turkey for abandoning bi-zonal, bi-communal federation and seeking confederation and partitionist solutions to the Cyprus problem must be unequivocally and categorically rejected. In the face of the Turkish side’s stand, the Greek Cypriot side is called upon to be doubly consistent, clear and convincing in its commitment to a solution of bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as described by the resolutions of the United Nations. It is called upon to be convincing in its readiness to resume negotiations from the point where they had remained at Crans Montana within the agreed framework, as the Secretary General of the UN himself has repeatedly stated that is the goal.

AKEL maintains that the finalization of our country’s partition will signal a new cycle of insecurity and tension in the history of Cyprus, which will be to the detriment of all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Only the liberation and reunification of our homeland can ensure lasting peace and security for all our people.
