Senior EU officials to take a stand by condemning what is happening in Ukraine

Written statement of Neoclis Sylikiotis, member of the Political Bureau

of the C.C. AKEL and AKEL MEP

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th July 2014, Nicosia

H Ukrainian government has dissolved the Parliamentary Group of the Communist Party of Ukraine and just yesterday President Poroshenko signed a law that prohibits the Communist Party. The trial against the party begins today.

Unfortunately, a new undemocratic blow has came to confirm that this government is dividing the country, violating fundamental human rights and has fascist orientations which is putting the future of Ukraine and its people in danger.

As the Political Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left we express our solidarity with the Communist Party of Ukraine, the fighters of democracy and for the country’s unity. We demand the lifting of the anti-democratic measures.

On behalf of the Political Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left  I wrote a letter today to the President of the European Parliament, the President of the European Council and the newly elected President of the European Commission calling on them to react to the anti-democratic measures of the Ukrainian government, which are prohibiting free political activity.

On behalf of the GUE/NGL I called upon senior EU officials to take a stand by condemning what is happening in Ukraine. We called on the EU to exert pressure on the President of Ukraine to stop the illegal procedure underway against the Communist Party of Ukraine and ensure its legal operation, as well as the integrity of all its members.
