The new Commission signals an anti-democratic and conservative turn of the EU  under “von der Leyen II”

The new Commission, as approved yesterday by the dominant powers of the European Parliament, sealed a new anti-democratic and conservative turn of the EU structure, far from the needs of the peoples of our continent.

The behind-the-scenes bargaining between the European People’s Party, the Liberals and Social Democrats led to the formation of the first Commission in the history of the Union that is officially based on the votes of the extreme right, specifically Meloni’s party, which even acquires a Vice-Presidency in the Commission.

In addition, certain Commissioners are burdened with connections to big business interests, corruption and non-transparency cases. The post of Equality Commissioner was abolished while not even the much-touted gender balance was achieved. With these blunders, the democratic role of the European Parliament regarding the control and accountability of the Commission was further undermined.

But the main thing is that the political staff of the new Commission – always under the leadership of Ursula von der Leyen – will continue the economic recipes that the EU currently implements and embodies, which undermine the labour rights and social policies that the people of Europe need in order to face the high prices, the housing and energy crises. They will also continue to arm the Zelensky government and support the Netanyahu government, adding fuel to the fire of the wars that threaten Europe itself. The political group in which The Progressive Party of Working People, (AKEL) participates, The Left in the European Parliament Group, unanimously voted against von der Leyen’s new Commission and its political directions.
