The results of yesterday’s European Council have for the umpteenth time shattered the vain hopes that were cultivated by the government’s big talk about severe sanctions that were going to be imposed on Turkey. Severe sanctions were not imposed and once again the issue has been referred to the future.
AKEL has pointed out from early on that there mustn’t be any illusions about how the EU operates and that the huge economic and geopolitical interests that connect powerful European states with Turkey must not be overlooked. We also pointed out that the government’s one-sided focusing on the issue of sanctions is an ineffective tactic.
The solution of the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis and framework is the one path that can guarantee security and peace for the Cypriot people and at the same time contribute towards stability and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean. The government’s strategy and handlings should have served precisely this goal.
