Sassoli expresses support towards Sener Elcil and Cyprus after AKEL‘s representations

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 20th November 2020, Nicosia

The President of the European Parliament D. Sassoli proceeded to make an important statement, expressing his full support and strong solidarity with Sener Elcil, as he is, as he himself underlined, a staunch supporter of freedom of speech and strongly believes that no one should be attacked or have to suffer for his or her political views, neither inside or outside the European Parliament.

The statement in question was sent to AKEL MEP’s G. Georgiou and N. Kizilyurek, as they had sent a letter addressed to the President of the European Parliament and the President of the European Commission on 7th November, informing them of the serious developments in the occupied territories, as well as of Turkey’ threatening actions, but also of the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community E. Tatar against Sener Elcil and the Turkish Cypriot primary school teachers trade union KTÖS.

Replying to the AKEL MEP’s, who addressed an appeal for practical support to be expressed towards Sener Elcil, as well as the condemnation of Turkey’s illegal actions, the President of the European Parliament stressed that he is following with increasing concern the situation in Cyprus and Turkey’s unilateral decisions with the opening of the area of Varosha. The President of the European Parliament also added that at every opportunity he confirms his solidarity with Cyprus. As he characteristically stated, he is sure that the debate scheduled for the plenary session of the European Parliament on 24th November on “The escalation of tensions in Varosha after Turkey’s illegal actions and the urgent need for the resumption of talks” provides an excellent opportunity for the European Parliament to reiterate its solidarity with Cyprus.
