Statement by AKEL MEP G. Georgiou at the plenary session of the European Parliament on the forest fires in the Amazon region

The “lungs” of our planet are burning and climate change is rapidly developing into a climate crisis, leading humanity to an ecological nightmare. The Amazon forest is burning because of economic interests. With the stamp of Bolsonaro’s policies, the Amazon forest is being sacrificed for the sake of profit in order to serve the interests of the large local and foreign companies. The 40,000 fires that were provoked in the Amazon forest this year were not accidental. They were the result of criminal policies that were pursued.
We demand the self-evident. The EU must take immediate initiatives so that aid and assistance is sent for the salvation of the Amazon. Immediate action and measures in the EU should be taken in order to prevent and deter illegal logging and arbitrary deforestation, but also the destruction and burning of forests.
Let’s stop making loud pompous statements. They are meaningless. We need drastic measures to be implemented. We demand that the EU announces immediately the allocation of specific funds for reforestation in all the EU member states as a matter of urgency.
Because the planet, our home, is burning, and we cannot afford to fail in our efforts!
