The European Right voted against a European Parliament resolution on the Amazon fires

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th September 2019, Nicosia

amazon fireThe European People’s Party, together with the rest of the conservative forces in the European Parliament, today voted against – and thus prevented – the discussion and tabling of a Resolution to the body on the enormous environmental disaster in the Amazon forest.

This is yet further proof that the ruling political forces in the European Parliament, with the party of the European right-wing at the forefront, put the profits of the multinational companies and its relations with the Brazilian ultra-right Bolsonaro government before the salvation of the environment, but also of the very future of humanity itself.

The Group of the Left in the European Parliament voted for the Resolution in order to promote the debate in the Plenary on the decisions and measures which the EU must take to provide support for the protection of the Amazon with all available means.

In addition, the AKEL MEP’s tabled a proposal to the European Commission for the allocation of funding for reforestation in the EU member states.
