President Christodoulides not only does not resist the old, but represents a mediocre copy of it

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

20 January 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

We wonder why Mr. Christodoulides set up the Advisory Council for appointments [through transparent, merit-based procedures] to the boards of the semi-governmental organisations after he ended up appointing cronies thus fulfilling pre-election relevant “jobs-for-the boys” pledges.

  • What kind of times is Mr. Christodoulides imagining, who was promising that he would be President of all Cypriots, when he could not find any honorable and competent people to appoint from the Left?
  • Does he or does he not pretend to see that Mr. Christodoulides’ list of appointees is rife with blatant cases of conflict of interest due to the professional and business activities of his appointees.
  • Furthermore, what exactly is the message he wants to send when he chose to appoint to the board of a public university a leading member of the fascist ELAM who publicly praises the Greek junta?

Mr. Christodoulides gave in before he had time to resist the sirens of cronyism/clientelism and power.

Not only does he not resist the old established order, but he represents a mediocre copy of it.
