Instead of acting immediately to confront crime the government ruling forces are content issuing big empty talk
Statement by AKEL MP A.Damianou, Head of AKEL Legal Affairs
17 January 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Over the last twenty-four hours, unfortunately, as in previous weeks, there has been an upsurge in organised crime. There also been an increase in the authorities’ inability to ensure security for citizens.
Unfortunately, the government ruling forces and the leadership of the police force are content with engaging in euphemisms and issuing proclamations, but crime isn’t tackled with words and pompous statements. The new Minister of Justice and Public Order, instead of rushing around and proclaiming conditions resembling a police state, should focus on ensuring the police force’s operational competence and capability, which is paying the price of the cronyism/clientelism and dismantling [of the force] that has taken place over the entire previous decade.
Specific and coherent policies are needed to confront organised crime. Political and institutional will and determination are also demanded. After all, the law enforcement authorities have important legislative tools at their disposal and technological capabilities that enable them to prevent, overpower, prosecute and punish crime.
The disturbing events of recent days, with crimes, murders, attempted murders, arson and attacks against peaceful people and their families in residential areas are extremely worrying. We call on the President of the Republic, the Minister of Justice, the Chief of Police, each from his/her own position and responsibility, to assume their responsibilities and act immediately.
The proven inefficiency and stalling bolster crime and heighten people’s concerns.
