EU ruling circles do not really want peace to be achieved in Ukraine

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th February 2015, Nicosia

EU inter nato ukraineThe European Union has put in force the day before yesterday, a new black list of individuals and entities against Russia, just three days after the application of the Minsk Ceasefire Agreement. It is obvious that the EU ruling circles, led by the pro-American axis, do not really want to see peace being achieved in Ukraine. In their efforts to implement their self-interested plans, we are concerned that they may lead developments to a generalised conflict.

Their main goal is to fulfil their expansionist designs in the East. Not only is no pressure being exerted on the Kiev government to implement the Minsk agreement, but Russia is being punished further. In the same framework, whilst on the one hand the seven most powerful countries (G7) of the world, including the European Union too, have welcomed the agreement in Minsk, on the other they are threatening the Russian Federation with unilateral sanctions.

It is now clear that the Cyprus government, through or without its presence, has consented to the new sanctions as well, which follow the embargo that was imposed on Russia. These actions result in negative consequences not only for the prospects of peace, but also for the Cyprus economy. The government must finally find the courage to express its opposition to the policy of sanctions, distance itself from the failed foreign policy which makes it obediently follow the decisions taken by the so-called Western allies and put forth its positions based on principles.
