Erdogan’s statements on Cyprus[1] are an expression of Turkish chauvinism and expansionism and viciously provokes the feelings of the Cypriot people, who for 50 years now have been subjected to the results of the twin crimes committed in 1974 and the ongoing Turkish occupation. At the same time, these inflammatory statements represent a blatant disregard for international law and of the Resolutions of the Security Council of the United Nations. At the same time, Erdogan’s statements also undermine the efforts currently underway for the resumption of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem.

AKEL denounces the statements by the leader of the occupying power and stresses that the Cypriot people will never compromise with the occupation, partition or any other scenarios to the detriment of the independence and freedom of our homeland. The liberation and reunification of our homeland, which can be achieved through a solution of the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis and framework, has been and remains an unwavering goal. This is precisely why AKEL is focused on the objective of the resumption of the negotiations from the point where they had remained in 2017, on the basis of the Guterres Framework and with full respect for all the convergences that have been recorded so far.
