Meeting between the General Secretary of AKEL and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on the Cyprus problem
30 October 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The meeting between the General Secretary of AKEL and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on the Cyprus problem took place in a very good atmosphere. During the meeting, views were exchanged regarding the prospects for achieving progress, which could lead to the convening of an expanded conference before the end of UN Secretary General António Guterres’s term of office.
On the part of AKEL, we reiterated our position that the convergences that have been achieved to date must be given to both sides and utilised as a basis for the resumption of substantive negotiations. Towards this end, we emphasised the need to make progress and we recalled AKEL’s proposal for an agreement on a specific roadmap based on the full respect for the negotiation acquis up to the end of the Crans-Montana Conference, including the convergences and the Guterres Framework.
The Confidence-Building Measures (CBM’s) that are currently on the table were also discussed, as well as their importance in the effort to create a better political climate and foster trust between the two communities. It was stressed, nevertheless, that the CBM’s, however important they may be, cannot replace the importance of resuming substantive negotiations for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
Our aim remains to make use of the current circumstances and to create real prospects for a solution to the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis, with political will, consistency and determination.
