€4.3 million approved to fight paediatric cancer

AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou press statement

16th July 2021

After intense discussions, two very important amendments were voted through yesterday by the European Parliament’s Energy, Industry and Research Committee, requesting €4.3 million from the 2022 Community budget be allocated for the fight against paediatric cancer across the EU.

More specifically, AKEL MEP G. Georgiou, together with other MEP’s, took the initiative to table two proposals to strengthen the fight against paediatric cancer in the EU. One of the proposals provides for €1.3 million to be given for the creation of an artificial intelligence technology application as well as a platform, which will collect digital data from all member states, which can be used to improve prevention, early diagnosis and the development of new treatments.

The second proposal provides for the creation of a new pilot programme. More specifically, it is requested that €3 million be invested in a high quality ongoing assessment of the nutritional status of children with cancer, with the aim of proposing targeted nutritional approaches that will support the treatment effort.

The proposals will be put before the plenary of the European Parliament for ratification.
