Decision of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of ΑΚΕL
13th October 2020, Nicosia
The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of AKEL, in its extraordinary session today, discussed the issues arising from the new report broadcast by Al Jazeera on the “golden passport” scandal and in general from the whole scheme that was set up during the administration of the Anastasiades-DISY government.
The Political Bureau of the C.C. notes the following:
- Al Jazeera’s new report reveals practices exploiting the passports for investment scheme and adds to all that that is being denounced internationally for years discrediting Cyprus and the Anastasiades-DISY government.
- The position of AKEL on the “golden passport” scandal does not change in the slightest, even now that the government has decided in a rush to suspend the passports scheme as a result of the universal outcry of society about the interwoven interests and corruption which have risen to unprecedented levels in recent years. AKEL has been denouncing and warning about the scandal of the “golden passports” scheme for years.
- We demand an immediate, effective and full investigation of all the cases and all the rings that have been set up around the investment program, including those reported in the relevant Al Jazeera program.
- The competent bodies of the state, and above all the government, the Attorney General and the prosecuting authorities, have the main and decisive responsibility to investigate everything all that happened surrounding the program. The government must stop blocking the investigation being carried out by the Auditor General.
The Political Bureau:
- Reaffirmed the determination of AKEL to continue confronting interwoven interests and corruption.
- Accepted the resignation of Christakis Giovanis from the position of MP and party positions, after consultation with the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party. The resignation is an act of political sensitivity.
- Demands the resignation of the President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris, who with all that has been made public has left the House of Representatives and the Republic of Cyprus in general irreparably exposed.
