Cyprus is on fire… – Urgent question tabled by AKEL MEP’s to the European Commission for the immediate activation of the Solidarity Fund to deal with the unspeakable tragedy that has shaken Cyprus.

In an urgent question tabled to the European Commission, AKEL MEP’s Giorgos Georgiou and Niyazi Kiziliyurek have called for the immediate activation of the European Solidarity Fund to provide relief to those affected by the deadly fires in the mountainous regions of Limassol and Larnaca.

In their question, the two AKEL MEP’s informed the Commission about the deadly fires in the area of mountainous Limassol and Larnaca which has claimed the lives of four seasonal workers and caused huge damage to private property and forest land.

The AKEL MEP’s asked the Commission to inform them about how the immediate activation and mobilisation of the Solidarity Fund will be ensured so as to provide immediate assistance to the Republic of Cyprus to deal with the natural disaster that has occurred.

At the same time, focusing on the rapid spread of the fires and the inability to offer prompt assistance, despite the activation of the RescEU, the AKEL MEP’s asked the European Commission to give a reply as to how the Commission intends to help Cyprus to acquire the necessary means to avoid similar disasters in the future.
