Anastasiades should stop sacrificing the Cyprus problem for the sake of his presidential candidacy

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 15th September 2017, Nicosia

In an interview the President of the Republic gave today, he correctly concluded that “time is passing by mercilessly as regards the Cyprus problem, a fact that is confirmed by various court decisions as well”.

While Mr. Anastasiades recognizes the negative consequences of the stalemate that exists surrounding the Cyprus problem due to the failure of Crans Montana, we regret to note that he is passively awaiting developments to evolve without taking any initiatives whatsoever, indeed precisely when the UN Secretary-General is putting the responsibility on both of the two Cypriot sides to create the preconditions for the continuation of the negotiation procedure.

Mr. Anastasiades, who has the responsibility of managing the Cyprus problem, should have already prepared an action plan and taken specific initiatives to break the deadlock. Unfortunately, Mr. Anastasiades has not done so and time – according to his own words – is mercilessly passing by.

Mr. Anastasiades is due soon to have a meeting with the UN Secretary-General who will obviously expect to hear how the Greek Cypriot side perceives the developments on the Cyprus problem. What will Mr. Anastasiades convey to him? The ambiguous public statements made for domestic consumption will not convince the UN Secretary-General to deal with the Cyprus problem. The UN Secretary-General has made this very clear several times, even the day before yesterday.

Mr. Anastasiades should stop sacrificing the Cyprus problem for the sake of his presidential candidacy.
