Anastasiades belatedly remembers to bring back the issue of UN Security Council member’s involvement in the Conference on Cyprus

Statement by Yiorgos Loucaides, Parliamentary Representative of

AKEL-Left-New Forces Parliamentary Group

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th October 2017, Nicosia

AKEL had maintained and maintains its position in favour of the participation of the United Nations Security Council permanent members in the International Conference on Cyprus.

However, as everyone knows very well, Mr. Anastasiades on 1st December 2016 annulled any involvement of the permanent members of the UN Security Council in the Conference on Cyprus, breaking yet another pledge of his, but also violating the unanimous position shared by the political forces.

Now, belatedly, he has remembered to bring back the issue of their involvement in the Conference on Cyprus. Mr. Anastasiades’ anxiety to become liked by specific sections of the electorate can’t be hidden. He evidently believes that through his constant mutations he will deceive citizens.

In this direction and by adopting Nicolas Papadopoulos’ policy on the most crucial phase of the negotiations, Mr. Anastasiades, with his regressions, has relieved Turkey of responsibilities, facilitated its plans to promote new fait accompli and distanced us from the solution of the Cyprus problem.
