Anastasiades continues to relentlessly modify his positions for pre-election purposes
Statement by Yiorgos Loucaides, Parliamentary Representative of AKEL-Left-New Forces
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26th October 2017, Nicosia
Mr. Anastasiades continues to proceed in a relentless way to modify his positions for pre-election purposes, as, unfortunately, he has as a rule also done in the past.
Either by adopting positions contrary to his actions, as happened on the issue of the involvement of the permanent members of UN Security Council in the Conference on Cyprus, either by acting within the framework of Nicolas Papadopoulos’ policy at decisive moments of the negotiation procedure.
The continuous regressions and mutations, therefore, have render no credibility whatsoever to any of Mr. Anastasiades’ pledges on the Cyprus problem too.
On the other hand, however, Mr. Anastasiades’ unreliability does not permit us to remain silent in front of the ongoing campaign of distortion and fear by Mr. Nicholas Papadopoulos. Mr. Papadopoulos’ election team’s fabricated references have nothing to do whatsoever with either the truth, or reason.
But how can it be the Turkish Cypriots are asserting that we the Greek Cypriots should appoint any of their officials during the transitional stage, so that the contrary can also happen, as Mr. Papadopoulos argues? Is it possible for elections to take place for the federal bodies before the solution, and hence before the relevant provisions of the Constitution are activated, as suggested by Nicolas Papadopoulos’ election campaign team? Don’t they realize that this would be tantamount to a recognition of the illegal regime? Or wouldn’t perhaps their approval by the people in referenda constitute a democratic legitimization of the provisional officials? Wasn’t this precisely what Tasos Papadopoulos also did in 2004?
We will not expand on this issue, because we don’t think it is necessary. However we need to reiterate that, as in the past, the campaign of fear and distortion, the unproductive stand of denial, maximalism and the so-called “new strategy”, without a strategic goal, will lead us with mathematical precision into adventures and the finalization of partition.
What is needed and can keep the hope and prospect for a solution and the liberation of our homeland alive is consistency and commitment, as well as dedication to principles and assertiveness; characteristics that only the candidacy of Stavros Mala meets.
