AKEL General Secretary completes his contacts in Britain

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th October 2017, Nicosia

The meetings and contacts of the General of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou in London were completed yesterday. The purpose of the General Secretary of AKEL’s three-day visit was to convey the message that the hope for a continuation of the dialogue on the Cyprus problem must be kept alive and that this time the conditions for a successful outcome must this time be created.

During the first two days of his visit, the General Secretary of AKEL was the keynote speaker at meetings organized in Birmingham and London during which he briefed the Cypriot community on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem, the economy and 2018 presidential elections.

Yesterday, Andros Kyprianou met with Amy Clemitshaw, President of the Department dealing with Greece, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean at the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He subsequently met with Sir Roger Gheil, Conservative Member of the Interparliamentary Parliamentary Committee on Cyprus. He then attended the working lunch organized in Parliament with Labour Party MP’s Khalid Mahmud (Shadow Minister of Europe), Fabian Hamilton (Shadow Minister of Peace and Disarmament), Pampos Charalambous, Catherine West and Dan Carden.

During the above meetings, the General Secretary of AKEL outlined and projected the positions of the Party surrounding the Cyprus problem and at the same time he expressed concern about the new fait accompli which the Turkish side is trying to implement on the ground in the occupied areas, a development which would make the efforts to achieve a solution more difficult.
