AKEL on World Mother’s Day

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7th May 2021, Nicosia

The second Sunday of each May is dedicated to the mother, a universal symbol of selfless love, warmth and protection.

Respect and recognition of the role of motherhood by the State cannot just be confined to issuing declarations, expressing emotions and engaging in celebrations. Cyprus is in need of a modern welfare state that recognizes in practice the social role of motherhood and supports mothers with modern policies and measures. That is precisely why we assert:

  • Increase in maternity leave and introduction of a plan for paid parental leave.
  • Effective implementation of the legislation for the protection of pregnant women workers, midwifes and young mothers from the arbitrariness of employers.
  • Support measures for single parent families
  • Substantial support to Local Authorities for the operation of high quality and low cost social care infrastructures
  • Subsidy plan for child and infant care costs for low- and middle-income families
  • Drastic combatting of domestic violence which has increased sharply during the pandemic.

Projecting these demands, AKEL wishes health and prosperity to all mothers in our country and throughout the world.
