AKEL on the allegations of sexual harassment in theatre companies

3rd March 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

We call on the competent authorities to investigate, quickly and very seriously, the allegations that have been made, as well as the public statement made yesterday by an actor regarding sexual harassment in the field of theatre.

We also call on the Theatrical Organization of Cyprus (THOC), as the competent state agency, to take initiatives and lead the efforts so that those working in theatre feel safe, both in THOC and in the other theatrical companies, to denounce those who, taking advantage of the position of power they held or possess, are exploiting in a criminal and inhuman way the need of actors, especially young people, for work. As a first step, we call on THOC to adopt the relevant code for the prevention and tackling of sexual harassment that the trade union organisations of PEO, SEK and the Employer’s Federation have drawn up.

AKEL supports and is in solidarity with every worker in the field of theatre, every person, victim of such behaviors, whether or not he/she finds the courage to make a complaint or not. We assure that we will contribute with all our forces to confront such criminal phenomena, as well as to the completion of a legislative framework that should act as a deterrent to the occurrence of such phenomena.
