AKEL on the new scandal involving the government and President Anastasiades

Statement by AKEL Nicosia/Kyrenia District Secretary C.Christophides

The Auditor General’s report on the procedures for the implementation of the Ayia Napa Marina project and the naturalisation of eight executives of companies associated with the project brings to light another astonishing and huge scandal. According to the Auditor General’s report:

– After the approval of the state for a change of the share capital of the company that undertook the project, the President’s son-in-law suddenly becomes the director of the company. From the evidence that exists it does not emerge that he invested any funds in the company in question.

– Directors of the parent company with the N. Anastasiades law firm as a provider unlawfully receive Cypriot passports. Indeed, the Council of Ministers granted citizenship knowing in advance without meeting the criteria. Up to now, Mr. Anastasiades was claiming that the involvement of his law firm was not under any circumstances accompanied by any irregularity. So what does he have to say now?

– A plot in a prime location worth a several million Euros was awarded with a contract lasting 50 years and with only 4,000 euros per month for the operation of an outdoor entertainment area that is expected to generate revenues of tens of thousands of euros per month.

The new scandal with the involvement of President Anastasiades, his law firm, his family circle and the Council of Ministers follows the chain of scandals of the Anastasiades-DISY government, which are discrediting Cyprus and have seen corruption reach unprecedented levels in our country. The new astonishing scandal must be fully investigated and those involved must at long last take responsibility.
